~ EAP Tutoring Program ~

Mrs. Michele McCarthy

Miss Cindy Thompson

What does EAP mean?
EAP is an acronum for Educational Assistance Program

What is EAP?
This is a reading tutor program brought to you by the Altoona Area School District, PA Department of Education and a grant through EAP.

When does tutoring take place?
These services are provided during the school day. This program will NOT take the place of your child's classroom reading program. We meet four times per week for 30 minutes a day.

Who are Logan's EAP reading tutors?
Miss Thompson - Is a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in elementary Education.

Mrs. Michele McCarthy - I am an elementary certified teacher. I taught in New Jersey and Altoona for 6 years before leaving to be at home with my two boys. I am excited to be back and working with the students at Logan Elementary.

How are kids chosen?
Miss McQuown services children in grades K, 1, and 2 who are selected to be in EAP based on their DIBELS scores. Students who are on a strategic level but are not at the benchmark level are chosen to receive extra help. We will work with these students to achieve their goal of reaching benchmark on the DIBELS test and be a more successful reader.

Mrs. McCarthy services children in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 who are in the high basic and low proficient level on the PSSA and 4 Sight tests. Her goal is to get these children at a consistent proficient level. The grant only allows me to work with a limited number of students at a time.

Will my child miss other classroom work?
While your child is sharpening his/her Reading Skills with me, the rest of the class will be working in small groups with the classroom teacher to sharpen their Reading Skills as well. Please understand, your child will NOT "miss" any new information or have to "make up" work that the other groups may have completed during this 30 minute period. It is an individualized period for all students.

Will there be "after school " tutoring this year?
No. During the day tutoring will replace this program.

What Intervention Program is being used?
Houghton Mifflin Soar to Success Reading Intervention Program, Guided Reading books, and teacher-created materials.
Can I sign my child up for the program?

No. We will contact you if your child is eligible for services.
Are children ever removed from the program?

In most cases a child will be in for the school year. If a child is removed it will up to the EAP tutor, classroom teacher and building principal.
How will I know how my child is doing?

There will be Monthly check lists sent home for parents to read, sign and return.
Can I decline services for my child if they are eligible?

After a meeting with the teacher and principal, the parent can decline services. Any questions or concerns, please call 946-8370 ext. 5026 for Mrs. McCarthy, ext. 5053 for Miss Adrienne McQuown.
