arts (reading, English, and spelling) are integrated into these six themes. Math
– 5th grade covers a wide range of topics from
place value, the basic 4 operations, fractions, decimals, geometry,
trigonometry, and probability. We will
practice with both a paper-pencil method as well as with a scientific calculator.
Closer to the
PSSA, the BIG EVENT will captivate students, parents, and audience members…what
is it? SURVIVOR! While students prepare for the upcoming PSSA
test, they will test their math skills to see who will be able to OUTWIT,
OUTLAST, AND OUTPLAY the competition and become the ULTIMATE SURVIVOR!
Social Studies
– Fifth graders will be learning the 50 states and capitals. They will be expected to match states to
their capitals as well as locate the 50 states on a map. Our second
unit is Colonial times followed by a third unit covering the American
Revolution. We then move into the
Constitution, Westward Expansion, and finish the year with the Civil War.
Science
– Our first unit will deal with weather and integrate the
first reading theme of Nature’s Fury. A project will start off the year in which
groups will construct a volcano and discover if their group’s will erupt the
highest in the 5th grade. This will be
followed by units titled Processes that Change the Earth, Cycles on Earth and
in Space, Matter and Energy, and Processes of Living Things. Possible
Field Trips (approximate dates) 5th grade will enjoy many field trips during the end of the school year. These include: Penns Cave, Mansion Park’s Fun Field Day, Morrison’s Cove Park, and a walking trip to The Meadows!
