School Counseling in the Classroom: Second step program

New this year, elementary school counselors across the Altoona Area School District will be implementing a program for all students called Second Step. Your child should be bringing home a letter with some information as well as an online activation code by the first week in October.

This program teaches skills in the areas of: skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, and problem solving, with different focuses in each grade level. See the letter sent home for specifics on what area your child's grade will be focusing on.

The overall goals of the program include increasing social-emotional competence, increased self regulation, improved classroom behavior, and increased on-task behavior.

Please use the activation code included on the letter sent home to create an online account at http://www.secondstep.org/ to find out more information about the skills your child is learning (NOTE: 5th & 6th grade are both using 5th grade materials this year as this is our first year utilizing the program and 6th grade wouldn't have had the foundational information necessary).
